  • INC: Increase (2 sc in one stitch)

Crochet Hippo Pattern

The Head

Note: Stuff the muzzle firmly as you work, especially near the bottom.

  1. Rnd 1: 6 SC in MR (6)
  2. Rnd 2: 6 INC (12)
  3. Rnd 3: (1 SC, INC) x 6 (18)
  4. Rnd 4-5: 18 SC (18) – 2 rounds total
  5. Rnd 6: (1 SC, DEC) x 6 (12)
  6. Rnd 7-9: 12 SC (12) – 3 rounds total
  7. Placement: Insert safety eyes between rounds 6 and 7, approximately 3 stitches apart.
  8. Rnd 10: Flatten the top of the head and work through both sides together to close:
    Ear (see below), 4 SL ST, Ear (see below).

How to make the Ear: In the designated stitch, work: (1 SC, CH 3, 1 SL ST) all in the same stitch.

  4. Rnd 4: (3 SC, INC) x 6 (30) (Optional: You can attach the tail here or sew it on later).
  5. Rnd 5: 10 SC, 1 POP (first leg), 5 SC, 1 POP (second leg), 13 SC (30)
  6. Rnd 6-9: 30 SC (30) – 4 rounds total
  7. Rnd 10: (3 SC, DEC) x 6 (24)
  8. Rnd 11: 9 SC, 1 POP (first arm), 4 SC, 1 POP (second arm), 9 SC (24)
  9. Rnd 12: 24 SC (24)

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the head to the body.

Finished Crochet Hippo

The Tail

  1. CH 6.
  2. Starting from the 2nd chain from the hook: 1 HDC, 4 SL ST.
  3. Fasten off and sew to the back of the body on Round 4.

Assembly

  • Sew the head to the body securely using the yarn tail from the body.
  • Ensure the muzzle is pointing forward and the ears are aligned with the legs.
  • Weave in all remaining ends.
